One Thing

Psalm 27:4, “One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”

While running for his life from King Saul, David’s world had been reduced to the thing that mattered most: to worship God in his temple. David had been waiting on God to give him the kingdom for which he had been anointed some years ago and what he got in the process was more of God. He became more godly as he waited, trusted, and rested in God’s timing, resisting the temptation to take matters into his own hands. But all this injustice and unrighteousness generated a longing in his soul for the house of the Lord where he could worship, fellowship with, and admire the Lord.

What about you? Has your world been narrowed down to this one thing? This one thing that can cause all the other ‘things’ of our world to fall into their proper place? God wants you and me to know him in such a way that we will say with the writer of Psalm 84, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.”

“Holy Father, so many things clamor for my attention that my longing for Your house and time alone with You is overshadowed. Please forgive me and allow me to taste of the sweetness that is reserved for those who commune with You, so that my world will be narrowed down to one thing as well. In Jesus’ name.”
